Workshops (Day 3)

The third day of the conference (Friday 28 July) is dedicated to running professional development and training. A diverse offering of half-day and full-day workshops are on offer to conference delegates, as well as non-conference delegates. Three workshops are free to conference delegates, but the costs for the other workshops are additional to the conference registration.

A summary of the nine workshops on offer is presented below.

Workshop - F1 Drilling for Non-Drillers (full day)
Description This course is intended for supervisory and management personnel who are involved in drilling operations, but do not have a practical background in it. It covers the fundamentals of drilling, starting with general drilling terminology and the different types of drilling and their application. Methods covered include diamond drilling, reverse circulation, auger, water well, SPT and cable tool. Further detail is covered around the use of drilling lubricants, directional drilling, in-hole tooling configurations and safety and maintenance requirements across the drilling operation.

Workshop - F2 From Data to Informed Decision Making (full day)
Description Do you know if the quality of your drilling data can be relied upon for key decision making? Are you confident the geological data you are relying on for critical drill and mine planning decisions is accurate and reliable? When millions of dollars depend on this, isn’t it worth knowing your data can be trusted? Join us for an insight into the latest technologies from survey data, structural logging and core orientation to driller operated gamma and in field sample preparation equipment. Finish the day with an overview of how all of this data comes together in ioGAS.

Workshop - F3 Structure Logging of Drill Core (full day)
Description This short course summarises the technologies available in exploration and mining and describes techniques of core orientation, marking-up, structure measurement and the visual representation of structural data. We provide a critical comparison of tools and methods available at each stage of the process.

Workshop - F4 Drilling Methods – Impacts on Sampling, Measurements and Tests for Deposit Characterisation (full day)
Description The workshop will address the impact of drilling methods and practices on sampling, measurements and tests associated with the characterization of material from mining, processing and environmental perspectives. This workshop is intended for geological technicians, geologists, mining and geotechnical engineers, metallurgists and environmental scientists - anyone who plans, acquires or analyses drill hole related characterisation data. A tour of JKCentre’s characterisation and testing facilities will also be included.

Workshop - M1 ALS Laboratory Visit (morning)
Description The visit to ALS Stafford laboratory will comprise an overview of the theory, applications, detection limits/interferences, and QA/QC protocols associated with the Mineralogy services, XRF fused bead analysis and automation, and ICPMS/ICPAES instrumentation located at Stafford. The visit will also include a tour of each section to see the instruments in operation.

Workshop - M2 Qld Govt Exploration Data Centre Visit (morning)
Description The Exploration Data Centre (EDC) stores Queensland’s geoscientific data and information, including drill core and cuttings from government and company exploration programs, rock/geochem samples and petrographic slides from regional mapping and field work, geophysical data including raw and processed seismic data, company exploration reports, and a HyLogger™ facility. Digital catalogues of material held at EDC link to various geoscientific databases including boreholes and geophysical surveys. The visit will tour the EDC facilities that support exploration, mining and research, providing insights into the state’s geological features and resource potential.

Workshop - M3 Mitchell Services Drilling Visit (morning)
Description The visit to the Mitchell Services drilling depot will include inspection of drilling rigs and support services, equipment used to perform different drilling methods, including bits, rods and ancillary equipment, including survey and orientation tools. Mitchell staff will provide expert explanations covering all aspects of the drilling process.

Workshop - A1 Lessons Learnt From Auditing Drilling Programs (afternoon)
Description A practical example-based workshop which includes drilling related issues that may influence the outcome of an audit of a drilling programme undertaken to collect information for resource estimation. This workshop will include drill program design and supervision, methods, surveying, orientation, sampling, sample preparation, analytical techniques, logging, data management, and QA/QC.

Workshop – 3D 3D modelling of drilling data using Leapfrog Geo (3 days)
Description This 3 day course aims to enhance data analysis and communication skills through the application of Leapfrog Geo software. The hands-on training will include a major overview of software functionality followed by practice on real-world datasets - attendees can also work on their own data if desired. The course will explore the relationships between lithology, alteration and structure to identify controls on metal distribution and investigate exploration drilling opportunities.
